How to choose a Chinese name by yourself?

First, you shouldn’t pick a name from a famous novel(not famous is also not OK ), I mean, you d better not choose a name from a book or a TV series. In China, less people called Li Kui Cao cao Zhang Fei ,especially, for a girl, it sounds strange. Also, you’d better not pick a name from historical celebrities, not like foreigner, parents are not likely to call their children Li Bai Du Fu Bai Juyi (who are the most famous poets in Tang Dynasty).Thirdly, you’d better not choose a too common word for your name, such as Mei-beautiful (美), Zhuang-strong (壮), Shuai-handsome (帅),etc. They have good meaning, but it’s countrified.

A good rule of thumb to guide you would be to play off of your name. Find people you know or famous figures, take their surname, take another's given name, and if it roughly approximates your own name transliterated into Chinese, then that's good.

For example: if you're surname is Miles, then you're name can be Mi 米 sen 森
